Move and Be Moved: Let Your Story Unfold through Writing and Yoga Wellness and Writing
The ancient holistic system of yoga–immensely popular today as a meditation and healing art–helps us to open our hearts, recovering our emotional core and connection to the world through breath, movement, and awareness. Poetry, called the “original breath,” seeks to do the same through words, images, and sound. In this course, the transformative paths of yoga, mindfulness, and writing will converge in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico, where we will practice yoga, write our own poems, and visit historic sites for inspiration and rejuvenation.
Nature has inspired yogis for thousands of years, as evidenced by the names of the poses—Tree, Bridge, Sun Salutation, Mountain, Eagle, Frog. Likewise, poets have walked the spiritual path for ages. We’ll read the work of Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz, Basho, Issa, Walt Whitman, e.e. cummings, Audre Lorde, Mary Oliver, Lucille Clifton, Li-Young Lee, Thich Nhat Hanh, Naomi Shihab Nye, and more for inspiration. We’ll visit places of beauty to be inspired by the natural landscape of New Mexico. We’ll use guided meditations and prompts to aid us in writing. Then we’ll share our work, joining words to movement as the spirit guides us. If poetry isn’t your jam, feel free to journal, write fiction, non-fiction, or musings! Come move and be moved as to inspire your creativity, build community, and open your heart. No prior yoga or creative writing experience necessary.
